China E Commerce Giant Pinduoduo Promotes South American fruit

Pinduoduo (www.pinduoduo.com) is a rapidly growing e-Commerce platform that is listed on NASDAQ. It is similar to Alibaba’s T Mall in that it does not buy goods directly for sale but hosts independent stores/sellers on its platform. It is not yet profitable but has 680 Million users in China and transaction revenue of over USD 180 Billion. They have a growing presence in promoting fresh produce with up to now a very strong focus on Chinese brands and farmers.

Now, Pinduoduo is boosting sales of South American produce. A news release on 15 September 2020 stated that sales of Chilean and Argentinian produce on the platform had increased by 310% over same period last year. Products promoted include fruit, seafood and meat. They are cooperating now with Chile’s Fruit Promotion Agency ASOEX and a Chilean National Pavilion was launched on their site in late August, the first such pavilion on the site.   

ASOEX is aiming to sell more Chilean cherries on the Pinduoduo platform this season. Last year they secured over 1 million orders for Chilean cherries on the platform during their Chinese New Year promotion period lasting one month.
